Forget diamonds. Crystals are a girl’s best friend.

At least according to Nathalie Colin Roblique, creative director of the swanky crystal brand Swarovski.

Crystals are so versatile, she says, they fit right in with any style.

As if to prove that point, the 44-year-old wore a dazzling ring made of clear and pink crystals during a recent interview with the JoongAng Ilbo after a promotional event in Seoul for the Austria-based brand.

Roblique spearheaded one of the company’s most recent motifs, called Swanflower. The line adopts Swarovski’s most representative emblem - the graceful swan - into an overall flower pattern.

Roblique, who joined the company in 2006, has been quoted as saying that Swanflower is “a common thread linking all of [the company’s] collections and the two keys values of Swarovski: poetry and precision.”

During the JoongAng interview, which took place at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Samseong-dong, southern Seoul, Roblique touched on her work, design philosophies, tips on wearing crystal jewelry and other topics.

Given her job, it should come as no surprise that Roblique is an avid fan and advocate of crystal jewelry.

She is quick to point out that while there are certain limitations to other types of jewelry in terms of size and colors, crystals know no limit - at least in her opinion.

As long as there is a technique to make crystal out of sand and water, you can shape the jewelry into any size and incorporate any color you like, she said.

To highlight that attribute, Roblique pulled out a large crystal with violet-colored drops of water inside.

The smooth, impeccable cut on the outer surface offered up different reflections, depending on the angle of the light. At the same time, the water drops inside blazed in a unique manner.

Crystal jewelry is not only diverse in appearance, but also in price, according to Roblique. She said consumers today rarely go beyond their budgets to buy jewelry they cannot afford just because it’s a luxury brand, particularly if it isn’t exactly their style in the first place.

Instead, she says, people are much smarter in how they spend their money, opting for affordable jewelry that closely matches their tastes and stylistic preferences.

That’s where crystal comes in.

A well-cut crystal resembles a diamond but is much cheaper, Roblique said. You can get, say, a high-quality pair of crystal earrings for between 50,000 won ($40) and 100,000 won ($80).

But there is a downside to the relatively inexpensive price, as some consumers tend to think that crystal jewelry is for younger women, Roblique said.

The crystal connoisseur, however, contends that crystal jewelry has benefits for middle-aged or successful women as well as those who are younger.

She says Swarovski’s Nirvana Ring, for instance, conveys elegance and grace. The ring is a big, thick piece of jewelry that comes in a variety of colors such as black, purple, pink and green, among others.

Roblique admits that bulky jewelry can be overwhelming for some women, especially those who aren’t used to wearing much bling.

“A ring would be the best item to start for those newcomers,” as it’s not as obvious as earrings or necklaces, she said. “Rings are rather subtle yet timeless.”

Chris Brown's Lawyer to Attempt to Dismiss Assault Case

As the waiting game continues in the Rihanna assault case, the singer can now at least return the on-loan jewelry she was wearing the night she was allegedly beaten by Chris Brown.

At the request of Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, L.A. Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg granted a delay in the case, with the next hearing set for May 28. Brown, 19, who has pleaded not guilty, did not attend the hearing. He was not required to show.

Geragos indicated at court Wednesday that he intends to file a motion to dismiss the case because of police leaks in the investigation, apparently a reference to Rihanna's injury photo that surfaced on the Internet, among other details.

"If Geragos makes an issue of leaked evidence, it's unlikely the judge will dismiss the case," says L.A. criminal defense attorney Jeffery Rubenstein, who's not involved in the case. "It's not police conduct at issue here, it's Chris Brown's."

Rihanna's attorney Donald Etra had sought the return of approximately $1 million in jewelry taken into evidence. All sides agreed that the items were to be photographed by police and returned to Rihanna, who had them on loan from jewelers.

The next step in the case is setting a preliminary hearing – in which Rihanna, 21, could be subpoenaed to testify – so the court can determine if there's enough evidence for a trial. If that hearing goes forward, it will happen within eight court days of May 28.

But the case may wrap up before then. Legal experts say Brown could strike a plea deal with prosecutors, that may include some jail time, at any time.

Although Rihanna and Brown have spent time apart, the pair recently reunited in L.A. before Rihanna headed to her native Barbados to be with friends and family.

The "Rehab" singer also enjoyed boating, sunning and rafting in the island nation with her pop-star pal Katy Perry last week. Like Brown, Rihanna has also started working on a new album.

Jeweler fires on robbers in parking lot

An out-of-state jeweler opened fire last night on a car containing three men who had robbed him when he stopped because he was lost in Westerville.
The shooting occurred about 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Fazoli's restaurant, 807 S. State St., after the men accosted the jewelry merchant from Indiana.

The jeweler, his wife and his daughter had pulled their sport-utility vehicle into the restaurant's parking lot after getting lost while heading to Easton Town Center from a jewelry show at the state fairgrounds, said Westerville police Cpl. Jon Bagwell. The merchant said he probably had been followed by the men from the fairgrounds.
Bagwell said the man, whose name he wouldn't release, was sitting in the parking lot looking at his GPS device while his wife and daughter went inside. One robber smashed in the SUV's driver's-side window and two others broke out a back window. They took jewelry and escaped in a silver Chrysler 300 that they had used to block in the SUV.
Bagwell said the jeweler, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, opened fire on the car as it drove away. The merchant reported hitting the car, but it was unclear whether anyone inside was injured. The gunfire also hit a van in the parking lot, but no one was injured.
Late last night, the Chrysler 300 was found abandoned, though officials wouldn't say where or whether it had bullet holes.
Bagwell didn't know the value of the jewelry.

Call it cheesy, but many couples still put stock in the romance of Valentine's Day, if its popularity as a proposal date is any indication.

But this year, the recession has started to take the sparkle off the occasion, with more couples putting budget before bling when shopping for a ring.

"People are looking for a bargain. They are shopping around quite a bit," said Daniel Angel, sales manager of Budget Diamonds Online, a Toronto-based Internet retailer.

A growing number of would-be grooms are lowering their budgets and looking for less expensive rings, including alternatives to diamonds and gold, according to retailers across the country.

"I just think money's tighter," said Niel Westman, president of Diamonds West Wholesale Inc., based in Langley, B.C. "Diamonds aren't cheap."

"There was a little leeway with the budget [before]," Mr. Angel said. "Now the budget is very exact. They want to stay under that budget at all costs."

The idea of getting a giant rock has lost some of its lustre, it seems. These days, more brides-to-be are sporting sapphires or birthstones on their ring fingers.

"We definitely have a lot of clients that don't prioritize with having to have a big flashy diamond in the centre," said Sarah Hamel, owner of Made You Look, a Toronto jewellery store.

Many jewellers say prospective grooms are also less willing to make a decision based on advice from salespeople. More than ever, they arrive at the store armed with information and know exactly what they want, according to diamond retailers throughout Canada.

The diamond industry has already suffered a blow in recent years after the controversy over conflict diamonds exploded in North America, due in part to the 2006 movie Blood Diamond.

Diamonds West, which offers wholesale prices as much as 70-per-cent lower than the retail price, is an example of how the market for engagement rings is shifting in the face of a recession. Calls and e-mails from prospective customers have been pouring in from across the country, Mr. Westman said.

"I think it definitely will increase, if anything," he said.

Meanwhile, many big-name jewellers are suffering major losses as consumers tighten up discretionary spending.

Tiffany & Co.'s worldwide holiday-season net sales dropped 21 per cent compared with the year before - a fact the company blames on the economic crisis and a marked decline in discretionary spending.

Birks & Mayors Inc. experienced an even bigger drop of 31 per cent in holiday sales compared with the previous year.

"It is what it is," said Anny Kazanjian, the company's divisional vice-president of public relations and events. "Canadian business is perhaps not as challenging as the U.S. market in general. This is when companies have to hunker down and stick to their core values and that's what we do best."

De Beers, the largest producer of diamonds in the world, said last month it will slash production in the wake of poor holiday sales, cutting the amount of rough diamonds made available to customers by up to 50 per cent over the next few months.

Waning demand has caused rough diamond prices to fall in recent months, and they could plummet an additional 30 per cent this year, according to a report by RBC Capital Markets analyst Des Kilalea.

That could translate into lower costs at the retail level, inflicting major damage on the public perception of diamonds.

As it becomes a more volatile commodity, "it remains to be seen if both men and women's emotional attachment to the product will be undermined," Nicholas White, president of White & Co., wrote in an industry analysis last November.

That was certainly the case with Shelley Sutton.

The Oshawa, Ont., woman, who got married last September, opted for a small, inexpensive wedding that wouldn't throw her and her new husband into debt.

"I have a problem with starting life out with an excessive debt load. It doesn't make sense," Ms. Sutton said. "It doesn't make sense financially and it doesn't make sense emotionally."

Instead of spending thousands on a huge diamond, Ms. Sutton got a half-carat ring with seven small diamonds arranged in the shape of a forget-me-not flower.

The price tag: $1,000.

While the ring represents an emotional bond between the newly married couple, Ms. Sutton said, it doesn't need a massive price tag to express a couple's love and commitment.

"[The] reality is if you're focusing more on the financial value of your wedding, you're forgetting the fact this is the joining of heart and soul and agreeing to live together in somewhat wedded bliss," she said. "You're agreeing to spend your life with someone. Not your bank account."

Natural gemstones are found in nature. Laboratory-created stones, as the name implies, are made in the laboratory. These stones, which also are referred to as laboratory-grown, {name of manufacturer} - created, or synthetic, have essentially the same chemical, physical and visual properties as natural gemstones. Laboratory-created stones do not have the rarity of naturally colored stones and they are less expensive than naturally mined stones. Stunning collection of jewelry goes on display in Glass Pavilion

For a collector, the endgame is placing their cherished trove in the right hands.

Floridian Nancy Levine believes she has found an appreciative home for her diamonds, amethysts, pearls, and delicately-wrought gold in the Toledo Museum of Art. Indeed, her “promised gift” of more than 200 sets and pieces of jewelry, most crafted in England and France between 1785 and 1885, is already meeting a key part of the promise: to let the beauties be seen.

Radiant Ensemble: Jewelry from the Nancy & Gilbert Levine Collection is in the Glass Pavilion of the Toledo Museum of Art through March 1.

Worn against the skin or one’s clothing, jewelry is as personal as art gets. It brings attention to the wearer, making her feel more beautiful. It’s a testament to one’s good taste and proclaims wealth.

“I find the public is just fascinated by any kind of jewelry and the stories behind it,” says Janet Zapata, a New Jersey jewelry historian who applauds Toledo’s planned acquisition. “I’m thrilled that they’re getting it. They want to be known as collecting jewelry.”

Museum officials won’t say what the Levine collection is worth. Zapata, who wrote about Toledo’s growing jewelry collection in 1999, expects it’s easily in the millions.

A passion

Levine and her late husband, Gilbert, a pianist by profession, lived in Paris for years, surrounded by French antiques. On a 1968 vacation to London, they spotted a beautiful Assyrian bangle in an antique store’s window. With engraved reliefs of a lion hunt, it was stunning on the arm, and they were hooked.

They searched for jewelry that was eminently wearable, and became fascinated by techniques, designs, and craftsmanship that flourished during a 100-year period. They bought every book on the subject they could find, scoured auction catalogs, and befriended dealers in New York and London. Ms. Levine learned some of the techniques and made jewelry.

“We developed a passion for much of the gorgeous jewelry that we saw and indulged it on the occasions when the beauty of a jewel and its affordability coincided. Budgeting to us meant buying the best available at a price we could afford,” Ms. Levine wrote in the opening pages of the 2007 book about the collection, Fascination: British and Continental Jewelry 1785-1885.

“With increased knowledge, we became more aware of the plethora of styles that abounded in the 19th century and their impact on the jewelers of the day. Soon we added greater stylistic diversity to our purchase requirements. This wasn’t hard to do; we loved the design profusion of that day.”

Eventually, they took stock of what they did not own, resolved to build a complete collection, and made specific purchases at auction and with the help of a dealer in England.

In the Glass Pavilion’s only opaque gallery, visitors will find luscious colors and brilliant handiwork interwoven with threads of history and geography. During the period the Levines focused on, the Industrial Revolution was blasting off in England, but they selected handmade jewelry. Pieces were typically ordered by an individual after poring through a jeweler’s sketch book of designs.

Indeed, in the center of the large gallery, glass curator Jutta-Annette Page has created a 19th-century jewelry-shop tableaux. A French table is flanked by chairs upholstered in red and gold, and a massive mirror has been newly installed in an antique frame and hung on a wall painted eggplant. On the table rests a Viennese jeweler’s design book, part of the Levine gift.

In 1785, fashionista Marie Antoinette was living the very good life, but the French Revolution would soon turn the monarchy on its head (and take hers).

Queen Victoria would rule England for 63 years. When her Prince Albert died, she ordered only mourning jewelry be worn (often black or with a locket that held a bit of the loved one’s hair).

Napoleon Bonaparte waged campaigns in Italy (creating a vogue for cameos and orange-red coral carved in Naples) and Egypt (initiating a passion for Egyptian motifs). His Empress Josephine adored the latest jewelry.

Opulence continued under Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, who loved stylish clothes and jewelry, and was intrigued by tales of Marie Antoinette.

An upper middle class grew — people who were neither aristocrats nor land owners with tenant farmers — and they desired the trappings of the rich. They liked jewelry that looked antique, suggesting it had been passed down through generations.

Transportation improved and Europeans traveled the continent, spending months, even years on the Grand Tour of which Roman antiquities and Pompeii were highlights. Trade with Brazil brought amethysts, topazes, and semi-precious stones to Europe. Mother lodes of gold were discovered in California and Australia.

Bangles and bracelets

In this dimly lit gallery, pinpoint spotlights aim to maximize glisten. These opulent, sometimes chunky pieces are an aesthetic not in vogue today, with a few exceptions from the latter half of the 1800s.

Gold bangles in the Assyrian or Egyptian style have never gone out of style. Likewise for the cannetille bracelets, in which tiny gold wire is worked into intricate designs of flowers, leaves, and shells. A brooch, circa 1860 England, would easily find a wearer today: rows of diamonds are set in a gold and silver crescent and a stalk of wheat flanked by two delicately twisted leaves. So would a Roman mosaic brooch and earring set, featuring the iridescent greens of a scarab beetle (Italian, circa 1865). Whether the small necklaces of 200 years ago would even fit the larger American necks is another question.

Matching sets of jewelry (parures; a partial set is a demi-parure) were presented and stored in beautifully crafted boxes usually including a necklace, one or two bracelets (one for each wrist), earrings, a brooch (which could also be worn as a pendant on a chain), and sometimes a tiara. Finding complete sets is rare as most were divided and given as wedding gifts to offspring, taken by fleeing aristocrats during regime change, re-set in new pieces, or sold for parts.

In addition to insuring, storing, and organizing this exhibit, the Toledo museum has pledged to have some of the Levine collection always on view, which may be included with exhibits in the pavilion and the main museum, said Page.

Toledo began accumulating jewelry in the early 1990s under the eye of Roger Berkowitz, long-time museum administrator, director, and fan of decorative arts, Page said.

“It’s grown by leaps and bounds. We’ve been acquiring so many things,” she said, adding that the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston are also active jewelry collectors.

Few U.S. museums collect jewelry, said historian Zapata. “Jewelry hasn’t been taken as seriously as some of the decorative arts, but that has been changing,” she said. “It comes down to space.”

The collection includes some attractive knock-off jewelry made of silver and metals for the working class. Absent are rings, which didn’t interest the Levines, noted Cynthia Duval, chief curator at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach.

“It’s extremely significant,” Duval said of the collection. It was housed for many years in its own room at the Florida museum and was exhibited at a few other venues in Florida, she said, adding that the room now houses Napoleonic arms.

Robbers in drag steal Paris jewels

Armed robbers wearing women's wigs and clothing made off with diamond rings , gem-studded bracelets and other jewelry worth $108 million from a Harry Winston boutique in Paris, in one of the world's largest jewel heists.

The brazen robbery early Thursday evening took place in the presence of security guards and security cameras in one of Paris' toniest shopping locales, just steps away from the tourist-filled Champs-ElysDees.

The robbers threatened the 15 employees with handguns and hit some on the head, according to a police official who cannot be identified under agency policy. The robbers spoke a foreign language at times and appeared to know employees' names, Isabelle Montagne, spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor's office, said Friday.

Montagne said there was only one client in the store at the time, and no one was injured. She called the incident "very well-organized."

Police said one group under suspicion was the so-called "Pink Panthers," a ring of jewel thieves mostly from the former Yugoslavia. The international police agency Interpol has blamed the group for jewel thefts in 19 countries in Europe, Asia and the Persian Gulf worth more than $150 million over the past 10 years.

A morbidly obese Wisconsin dog survived being frozen to a sidewalk overnight, probably because he was insulated by layers of fat, authorities said.

Carey Payne of the Sheboygan County Humane Society said few dogs could survive the single-digit temperatures, and it was likely the fat that made the difference for the 120-pound aging border collie mix named Jiffy.

Jiffy's 59-year-old owner was arrested on suspicion of animal neglect. She told police she tried to get the dog inside but couldn't, and instead checked on him every few hours.

Shelter staff used warm water to unstick Jiffy. Any long-term health effects were unknown.

FERNANDINA BEACH - Lindy Kavanaugh pulls a pair of intricately designed gold earrings from an antique case in the center of her jewelry store, a restored 19th century building in the heart of the downtown Historic District.

She dangles chandelier baubles with a pattern derived from ironwork in historic Bosque Bello Cemetery.

They are one of the pieces in the debut line the jewelry designer has named Ornate.

All of the pieces in the jewelry line tell a story and were inspired by images of historic sites from around the world.

Another pair of stud earrings are designed in the image of floral detail from scrollwork on the iron gates in the famous La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

There are two pieces based on a shaft of wheat hidden in the details of an iron railing surrounding the porch on the second floor of the Historic Nassau County Courthouse on Centre Street.

"The design is simple and beautiful, but many people don't notice it," said Kavanaugh.

Her inspiration

Kavanaugh, 35, always wanted to develop her own line of jewelry, but was looking for the right inspiration. It was actually her husband, Hardee, who gave her the idea.

"He pointed out that when we traveled, most of the pictures I liked to take were of architectural details of sites we saw on our trips," she said. "That is when I began to imagine the transformation of these beautiful historic designs into pieces of jewelry."

Kavanaugh gathered the couple's vacation photographs and went to work. The result was the beginning of a jewelry line that includes earrings, pendants, bracelets and rings, all made from gold.

Kavanaugh says she has always had a creative side.

Most days after high school, she would visit the Fernandina Beach car dealership owned by her father, Ron Anderson. She was never fascinated by the car business, but the work of a jewelry designer, Jeff Steel, whose shop was near her father's business, caught her eye.

"I started hanging out around his shop to watch him work," she said. "I was fascinated by the way he worked with his hands, creating beautiful pieces of jewelry. I knew that I was interested in doing what he did."

When Kavanaugh graduated from high school, Steel offered her a part-time job in his store.

"Lindy is strong-willed and self-motivated," he remembers. "She was hard-working, even with grunt work, which is unusual in this town. She has a lot of style."

Working at Tiffany's

After four years of college, Kavanaugh decided to switch gears, give up on earning a marketing degree, and put her energy toward pursuing jewelry full time. Kavanaugh moved to New York and earned a Graduate Gemologist diploma at the Gemological Institute of America.

After finishing her studies, she took a job at the famed Tiffany and Co. jewelry store on Fifth Avenue in New York. There, she says, she was surrounded by the work of famous jewelry designers and beautiful pieces of jewelry that often were like works of art.

Four years later, her father convinced her to trade big-city lights for small-town charm and move back to Fernandina Beach where she opened her own jewelry store called Lindy's.

"I never had any managerial experience. I had to learn on my own." Kavanaugh said, adding she learned a great deal from her business-savvy father.

'Her honest opinion'

It is her candor, coupled with her creative talents, that her customers say are behind her success as a jeweler.

"Lindy always shares her honest opinion," said long-time client Susan Goldman. "I took her some boar's teeth that I'd collected in Central America, which she used to make a necklace. I had some ideas about the way I wanted them designed, but she took them to a whole new level. She has very good taste and a good sense of style."

Kavanaugh, a mother of two - Kate, 4, and Will, 2, - says one of the challenges she faces is balancing the time spent between her young family and her career.

"Having kids has caused me to focus more on my jewelry designing and not treat it so much like a hobby anymore."

Despite balancing family and craft, Kavanaugh has completed 14 pieces in the past year. With several more pieces of jewelry in the works, neither she nor Ornate show any signs of slowing down.

Lured by possibility of gold, treasure hunters hit beaches

Last summer Roy Evans, history buff, outdoorsman and "amateur treasure hunter," set off in search of buried riches.

Five hours a day, he scoured the fine, white sands of Georgia's Tybee Island, and within a week he had struck gold: 23 separate pieces including two crosses, 12 rings, a handful of medallions and broaches and one chain necklace -- a bounty worth several thousand dollars at least.

"It was amazing, what I found that week," said Evans, who lives in Greer, S.C. "It might have been a new record for me."

But the loot wasn't buried by pirates. The jewelry, like countless other valuables all over the country, was lost by distracted and forgetful sunbathers, tucked into a shoe or under a corner of a beach blanket before a swim only to be misplaced in the confusion at the end of the day. To cash in, Evans needed only luck, a little patience and his trusty MineLab metal detector.

This summer, amateur treasure hunters predict the beaches will be filled with people just like Evans. Lured by the skyrocketing price of gold -- now more than $900 an ounce -- and the thrill of serendipity, new would-be treasure diggers are joining the ranks of experienced beach "metal detectionists," as they call themselves, in what might be a modern-day gold rush.

Gone are the days when most of the beep-beep-beeps meant digging a big pit only to pull out a penny or crushed soda pop can, said Stu Copperwheat, president of the Electronic Archaeological Recovery Treasure Hunters club of central New York state. Metal detection technology has improved considerably over the past decade, and today's machines are sensitive enough to tell the difference between gold and platinum, nickel and quarter, necklace and kabob skewer.

The detectors run from $800 to several thousand dollars, but unlike other specialized hobby equipment, metal detectors "almost always pay for themselves," Copperwheat said. "You find one or two valuable things and there's the price of your machine."

While most serious detectionists aren't primarily gold seekers -- the most prized finds are historical relics like 18th-century coins or Civil War uniform buttons buried in the woods and fields of former battlegrounds -- beaches do hold a particular appeal, Copperwheat said. A detectionist might search and dig all day on a buggy, hot field and find nothing but rocks, but rarely do beach hunters come away empty-handed. Plus it's fun and easy to shovel light, loosely packed sand amid volleyball games and barbecuing families.

Evans himself switched entirely to beaches for his treasure hunting about 15 years ago, when he "just got too old to fool around with picks and mosquitoes and snakes" on Revolutionary War battlefields. The change has proved to be a lucrative one: all told he has found 150 diamond rings on beaches, including two that were appraised for nearly $4,000 each.

And those are just the engagement rings; unfortunate beach-goers lose all kinds of jewelry. If it's made of precious metal, Evans has found it in the sand: "class rings, confirmation rings, earrings, necklaces . . . even a few solid-gold false teeth."

Evans said he's motivated in part by the adventure of the hunt and the money, but also by sympathy for what others have lost. "It must be a real heartache, losing something that means so much," he said.

Sometimes initialed or inscribed memorabilia provide enough clues to track down an owner -- most metal detector enthusiasts tell stories of triumphantly reuniting former high school football stars or Vietnam veterans with their class rings and dog tags -- but most baubles found on beaches are plain and unmarked.

"The goal is always to try to return something," said Ross Soderberg, of the Great Lakes Metal Detector Group. "But stuff with no name on it, well, that's just too tough to find the owner."

Instead, Evans divides the nicest jewelry among his wife and two daughters and displays the prettiest rings with precious stones in a glass case in his living room. The rest he sells by the ounce, money that has served to fund vacations and supplement his salaries from General Motors and Lowe's Co.

And when the wedding band pickings are slim, there's still money to be made in "clad," a detectionist term for coins minted after 1964. They may not be collectibles, but pailfuls of nickels and dimes still add up. Matt Smechler, president of the Cascade Treasure Club in Seattle, said the extra change he finds while hunting covers the price of batteries for his metal detector and gas for his car.

"Or at least, I used to pay for gas with it," Smechler said.

Experienced detectionists have a little advice: It's best to head out both late in the beach season and late in the day, to give the swimsuited crowds time to drop their valuables. Join a group of amateurs to compare tips, learn new skills and "brag about what you find," said Donnie Bagwell, a member of the South Carolina Treasure Club. Invest in a quality detector that's able to discern the sterling silver among the twists of tinfoil.

And cultivate a sense of wonder, because "you never ever know what you might find," Soderberg said. "Last week I found a bunch of pop tops, a shoe buckle and platinum wedding band."

And any advice for the beach-going public?

"If you don't want to lose it, never, ever wear your jewelry to the beach," Soderberg said. "You think it's not going to happen to you, but it can and it will. In fact, it's happened to me."
